Apparel Product Developer I

We are expanding our product team! Cotopaxi needs optimistic, curious, and driven product developers who love making great gear, paving new ground, and impacting humanity in positive ways. Areas for emphasis include apparel, sleeping bags, and accessories.

The right developer will be a passionate problem solver, a maker, and a doer. We need someone who will take ownership of difficult problems. This person will work closely with the product design team, merchandising and planning team, and marketing team.

This person will be responsible for managing the development process for apparel, accessories, and sleeping bags by collaborating closely with Director of Development, Category Manager, Designer, QA, factory, and mill partners and contract manufacturers to ensure that design integrity, quality, and target price are met/maintained and that products are developed within established timelines. He or she must remain true and sensitive to the creative directions of Design, while maintaining the highest quality of standards for product development. This person will also balance the needs of Design, Merchandising, Production.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Designer to procure critical design information related to the technical development requirements of a style or product, including: material, trim, price, color direction, style intent, and tech pack creation 
  • Follow prototype creation through pattern, sample, fit, and grading processes by collaborating closely with these groups to ensure specification and prototypes are as accurate as possible and represent design intention
  • Offer suggestions, solutions, changes, and production perspectives to improve products and ensure successful commercialization of the product during manufacturing 
  • Shepherd target costing of product during the development process
  • Establish parameters for style specifications, style measurements, and follow quality and construction standards
  • Identify/document any special construction details or sewing methods that need to be communicated to the garment factories
  • Work closely with Director of Development, Designer, Merchandiser, Quality Assurance, and Factory Merchandising team to understand our contract manufacturers’ capabilities, and work closely with Sourcing and Material Research to identify and source appropriate materials and trims for style development, keeping proposed garment country of origin in mind at all times—assist with creating and updating seasonal materials and parts lists and manage/track color development and lab dip needs
  • Review factory prototypes for accuracy, quality, and function. Communicate findings to the appropriate persons including Designer, Quality Assurance, and Factory Merchandising team. Update tech packets with appropriate changes
  • For the assigned category: ensure that Bills of Materials, specifications, measurements, and construction comments are put into database, maintained, and accurate. Manage prototype samples
  • Create strong cross-functional team interaction with Apparel Creation team members, operations, and manufacturers to ensure a coordinated and efficient process
  • Create and manage color specs, technical construction specs, and final Quality Assurance specs
  • Manage sales samples inspection, staged production inspection, final goods inspection, document findings
  • Manage QA sample and PP sample ordering, approval, documentation, revisions, and storage. Trigger POs by approving the QA sample and communicating to the Category Director and Merchandising team

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree; coursework in textiles, manufacturing, or related desired
  • 3+ years’ work experience directly related to apparel product development is required
  • Comprehensive knowledge of knit and woven apparel construction methods and manufacturing sewing operations, including: pattern making, grading, and the marker making process. Possess strong knowledge of materials and functional aspects of garments
  • Possess strong organizational skills and ability to work under pressure, meet strict timelines, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills to deal with various levels of management and employees within the organization as well as vendors and worldwide personnel
  • Ability to negotiate production deadlines with individuals/departments involved
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop
  • International travel required
  • Sewing skills a big plus
  • Ability to present ideas clearly and visually to non-English speakers and team members not related to product development
  • Must be able to receive all, consider all, and judiciously implement feedback from team members, manufacturing partners, consumers, lab testing, and field testers
